Genevieve Weber, Ph.D., LMHC, is Program Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions, School of Health and Human Services at Hofstra University. She is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of New York with a specialization in Substance Use Disorder Counseling. Dr. Weber teaches a variety of courses related to the training of professional counselors including group counseling, multicultural counseling, psychopathology, and psychopharmacology and treatment planning. She has over ten years experience working in community agencies where she provided counseling to diverse clients with both substance use disorders and mental health concerns. Dr. Weber lost her brother to a heroin overdose in 2017 after he battled addiction for twenty years. This experience and tragic loss motivates her to examine the influence of mental health on wellness and how protective factors can mediate such risk. Also in her clinical and research work, Dr. Weber focuses on the impact of homophobia and heterosexism on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, with particular attention to the relationship between homophobia, internalized homophobia, and substance use among LGBT people.
